Your Facilitator

Dr. Chris Timmermann

Dr. Chris Timmermann is a neuroscientist and psychologist studying the brain and mind through non-ordinary states of consciousness, including psychedelics and meditation. He co-directs the UCL Centre for Consciousness Research with Prof. Jeremy Skipper.

He obtained his PhD in Neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, where he led the DMT Research Group—work that pioneered the science of psychedelics in the 2010s. His team researches the neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology, and beliefs of meditation and psychedelics to inform consciousness and mental health.

His work appears in high-impact journals and has been covered widely (including The New York Times, BBC, The Guardian, and WIRED). He has given over 200 talks worldwide as an educator, speaker, and science communicator, and teaches on psychedelics, meditation, consciousness, and non-ordinary states across the UK, USA, Europe, and Latin America.

He is director and co-founder of the ECOH Foundation for the Study of Human Consciousness, supporting science and education on non-ordinary states in Latin America. His work has helped shape psychedelics as tools for medicine and personal development, and he advises companies and individuals interested in these applications.

Course Curriculum

5 modules across 10 weeks of live lectures, blending cutting-edge science with philosophical inquiry.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the core principles of psychedelic neuroscience, including neuroplasticity, brain network modulation, and models like REBUS and neural entropy.

  • Describe how psychedelics affect perception, cognition, and the experience of self, and connect these changes to broader theories of consciousness.

  • Identify the therapeutic potential and risks associated with compounds like psilocybin, DMT, and 5-MeO-DMT, including their emerging clinical applications.

  • Critically assess the ethical, cultural, and social dimensions of psychedelic use in both clinical and traditional contexts.

  • Compare and contrast ancient and modern frameworks for working with non-ordinary states, including shamanic practices and meditation-based insights.

  • Articulate how psychedelics may enhance creativity, support emotional healing, and alter patterns of thought and behavior.

  • Engage in informed discussion about the future of psychedelic research and its potential contributions to mental health, neuroscience, and human flourishing.

  • Integrate philosophical and phenomenological perspectives to better understand the subjective dimensions of psychedelic experiences.
